What is STEM in Education.
Writing this article reminds me of growing up in a rural village setting in Uganda. In my early years of school what we call pre-primary today, the learning was done through writing down on the ground because majority of us did not have books.
Fun experience that in modern day, we build our children sand pits to have fun which is most of the time restricted. Anyways, let me go back to why I decided to write this piece.
This is the teaching of Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with emphasis on preparing the learners to excel in their careers. I was introduced to this field in my early thirties by my mentor -Rugyendo Arinaitwe, God bless you. I fell in love with this type of education.
Majority parents tend to think that STEM prepares children to be Engineers only, heaven no! The skills gained from STEM education go far beyond being successful in STEM fields. In the process, children acquire skills that enable them to be successful in various fields outside STEM fields.
Key STEM education Skills to expect
STEM-based education teaches your children more than science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts. The focus is majorly on hands-on learning with real-world scenarios that in turn help in developing a variety of skill sets – creativity and 21st-century skills.

For instance, a few years ago, we had personal assistants in offices, several accountants in one office, several surgeons etc. Lately these have been populated with automation, therefore without an extra skill, you are likely to be phased out.
Wondering what these skills are? Here we you, 21st-century skills include

- Social and communication,
- Flexibility, availability and initiative.
There other key skills derived through STEM learning include among others

- Entrepreneurship skills
- And many more
Irrespective of the future career path chosen by these children, these skills go a long way to preparing them to be outstanding in their different from the rest. Remember to guide them early enough to secure their future that you desire for them. Like an African proverb says “akati kinikwa kakirikabitsi” (a tree is better bent when its young)
